Solar power systems for ports and terminals

The idea for sustainable, solar-powered mooring dolphins was first conceived in 2013. Straatman received the request from a main port authority to investigate the possibility of powering capstans without power cables, in particular for dolphins located in open water. In close cooperation with the port authority we developed a design based on solar panels.

After a pilot project in 2014, the design was further optimised for installation and its size was reduced. Working lights and navigations lights were also integrated. This second generation of the design was then ordered by the Port of Rotterdam. Since then we have delivered our solar powered systems to ports and terminals across the globe!

Benefits of solar powered systems for ports and terminals

  • Guaranteed and continuous availability of power
  • No more damaged cables caused by anchors or dredgers
  • Expensive and risk-full cable laying on the sea or port bottom is history
  • Reduction of lead time during construction of dolphins and berths
  • Low maintenance
  • Reliability
  • Reduction of energy costs
  • Environmental contribution
  • Increases safety
  • Gives the possibility to install electrical units on places were regular power supply is not possible

Solar powered mini capstans

We engineer and manufacture custom designed capstans in any shape and size. For this project we were asked to provide a winching solution for a remote and powerless area. Our off grid solar powered system provides the required energy for a 1.5kW capstan, giving it a hauling speed of ±15m/min and a running pull capacity of 500kg!

Our mooring and dredging expertise combined

A couple of years ago we used our expertise to design remotely operated 250 tons quick release hooks, equipped with a solar powered hydraulic powerpack. These are used by a mega cutter suction dredger on their left and right anchor line pontoons, for safe deployment and operation. The lines are used to move the ship in a left-to-right motion, sweeping their dredging work along the sea or river bed.
