Machinefabriek Straatman Voted #1 in the SEXY TOP 5!
Maritiem Nederland recently voted our innovative solar systems the Sexiest Energy Transition Project in Europe’s largest port! The solar systems, quick release mooring hooks and capstans were manufactured by Machinefabriek Straatman and installed in the Port of Rotterdam. The installations did not go unnoticed, with the leading Dutch maritime magazine referring to them as "the face of the harbor".
Renewable Energy in the Maritime Sector
We’re especially excited about this news because it shows that using renewable energy sources is gaining momentum in the maritime sector. The most important advantage of solar energy is the fact that it allows systems and machines to operate autonomously. This means no reliance on fossil fuels and no CO₂ emissions, as well as a significant reduction in maintenance- and energy costs.
ATEX Certified
The sustainable aspect is not the only thing that makes our solar systems unique; they are also ATEX certified, which means that they are suitable for use in potentially explosive atmospheres such as Rotterdam’s Botlek area – where the quick release mooring hooks and capstans are located. Botlek is home to several power stations, making the presence of the solar powered mooring equipment an important symbol of the Port’s ambition to move towards a more sustainable future.
Our quick release mooring hooks and capstans are not the only solar powered products we manufacture; meanwhile several hydraulic power-packs are also equipped with state-of-the-art solar systems. The solar systems provide sufficient energy to operate them, and to power the integrated dashboards that provide real-time data about power consumption, battery status and equipment usage.
