ATEX Capstans for HES Hartel Tank Terminal
31 January 2022Straatman delivered fifteen custom-made vertical capstans to HES International B.V. These units are installed at the new HES Hartel Tank Terminal on the Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam. The terminal provides storage for petroleum products and biofuels. Therefore, all equipment must meet strict safety and durability requirements.

Designed for safety and performance
We designed the capstans specifically for ATEX Zone 1 environments. Each unit is fully weatherproof and built for long-term outdoor use. The capstans are powered by an efficient 7.5 kW IE1 ATEX motor. This enables:
- Fast line handling at 25 m/min
- Strong pulling force of 15 kN
As a result, operators can work both quickly and safely.
User-focused design
We focused strongly on ease of use. The capstans support two rotational directions and include an instant brake system. In addition, the emergency stop remains accessible at all times. This improves safety during daily operations. We also added custom stainless steel 316 covers. These protect electrical components from damage caused by messenger lines. At the same time, they prevent contamination from bird droppings on buttons and switches.
Built for harsh environments
Each unit features a C5 high-quality coating system. This protects the capstans against corrosion and harsh weather conditions. As a result, the equipment delivers long-term reliability with minimal maintenance.
Installed and operational
The capstans are now fully installed at the terminal. Recently, we visited the site to see the units in operation and capture the final result. This project shows how Straatman combines safety, performance, and durability in demanding industrial environments.
