Adhesion Testing for Reliable Coating Performance
5 december 2023At Straatman Dredging & Construction, quality is central to everything we do. This also applies to our coating processes. A coating must not only look good but also adhere properly to the surface to provide long-term protection. Therefore, we regularly perform pull-off adhesion tests, also known as adhesion tests. These tests verify whether the coating bonds correctly to the material.
Why adhesion testing matters
A coating only performs well if it remains firmly attached to the surface. Good adhesion ensures protection against corrosion, wear, and environmental impact. Without proper adhesion, coatings can fail prematurely. This can lead to damage, maintenance costs, and operational risks.
How the test works
We carry out the adhesion test 7 to 14 days after the coating process. This allows the coating to fully cure before testing. The test is performed on a separate test plate, coated under the same conditions as the actual product. This ensures accurate and representative results. A special metal dolly is glued onto the coated surface using a strong adhesive. This dolly is then connected to calibrated testing equipment. Next, the force is gradually increased. The equipment measures the exact force required to pull the coating loose from the surface.
Clear and measurable results
During the test, the pressure increases steadily until the coating, or part of it, detaches. The measured value indicates the adhesion strength of the coating. If the result exceeds 5 MPa, the adhesion meets the required standard. This confirms that the coating is suitable for demanding applications.
Documented quality assurance
All test results are carefully recorded in a detailed inspection report. This report forms an essential part of the coating certification process. By performing these tests, Straatman ensures consistent coating quality and reliable long-term performance under real operating conditions.
