Commissioning of Mooring System on FSRU Toscana

Straatman successfully delivered and commissioned a complete mooring system for the FSRU Toscana. The floating terminal operates about 22 kilometres off the Italian coast, between Livorno and Pisa in Tuscany. The system supports safe side-by-side mooring operations between the FSRU and visiting LNG carriers. These operations require reliable equipment and accurate load monitoring.
On-site engineering and pre-commissioning
Our engineers travelled to the FSRU to perform the pre-commissioning of six double Quick Release Mooring Hooks. Each hook is designed for offshore LNG operations and demanding environmental conditions. All hooks are equipped with explosion-proof capstans, allowing safe line handling in hazardous areas. The system also includes a remote release function. Operators can release individual hooks from a safe location when necessary. Each hook is fitted with ATEX-certified load cells. These sensors continuously measure the forces acting on the mooring lines. Operators receive real-time insight into the mooring loads during operations.
Central monitoring and control
During the visit, our engineers also tested the central monitoring system in the control room. This system provides a clear overview of the entire mooring installation. Operators can view live load data, alarms, and system visualisations on the control interface. The system also stores historical load data for analysis and reporting. From the control panel, operators can release individual hooks or all hooks simultaneously if required. This functionality increases both operational control and safety.
