  • Smart Bollards for MSC Terminal Valencia

    3 oktober 2024

MSC Terminal Valencia is a major container terminal serving Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping company. As vessel sizes continue to increase, the demands on mooring infrastructure also grow. Therefore, at the end of last year, MSC Terminal Valencia approached Straatman Mooring Systems to explore a Smart Bollard solution. The goal was clear: gain better insight into mooring line forces and improve safety during operations.

    Addressing growing mooring challenges

Larger container vessels generate higher forces on mooring lines. These forces increase further during strong winds and rough sea conditions. Without proper insight, mooring lines can become overloaded. In extreme cases, lines may break and vessels can move away from the quay. This creates serious safety risks. A Smart Bollard directly addresses this challenge. It measures mooring line loads in real time and provides continuous data to operators.

    Real-time data and operational control

The Smart Bollard connects to Straatman’s MoorControl software platform. This system gives operators a clear and real-time overview of mooring conditions. Terminal operators, port authorities, and vessel crews can monitor loads at any moment. In addition, the system stores historical data for analysis. As a result, users gain better insight into mooring behaviour and can make more informed decisions. This improves both safety and operational efficiency.

    From pilot to implementation

Following the successful introduction of the Smart Bollard in the Port of Rotterdam, MSC Terminal Valencia decided to move forward. They placed an order for RSB-150 Smart Bollards. Installation is planned for this summer in Valencia.

With this project, MSC Terminal Valencia takes a clear step towards data-driven and safer port operations. At the same time, Straatman continues to expand the application of Smart Bollards worldwide. These systems help ports handle larger vessels while maintaining control, safety, and efficiency.
